Buying eco clothes can be confusing, especially when so many companies are now using it as a marketing gimmick to increase sales! But bear a few simple facts in mind and you should be able to distinguish the genuine eco items from the rest.
There is a lot you can learn from looking at the label or asking yourself a few questions. Here are some of the most common characteristics of eco clothes:
- Organic: The word organic, when it comes to clothing, helps you to understand the harm that its production may or may not have caused. For example, cotton grown to make clothes typically uses more pesticides than any other material, and these are very harmful to the environment. In fact, cotton growth accounts for a full 25% of all pesticide use! If you want to buy clothes that don’t contribute to this then go for organic cotton.
- Recycled: There is no doubt that recycled clothing is eco friendly. This is simply down to the fact that you aren’t buying anything new, you’re just re-using what someone else didn’t want. Be eco friendly and shop for recycled clothes in charity shops or vintage stores. You might even find that this is the best way to find unique items of clothing at bargain prices!
- Sustainable: It is always important to buy sustainable products, whether that’s clothes or anything else. This means that the materials and resources used won’t be overdoing our Earth’s resources – they have time to grow before all of the materials are consumed. Did you know that bamboo is a great sustainable material for eco friendly clothing? It can product some great pieces!
- Donations: You might find that some eco-conscious companies will donate a percentage of their profits to an eco friendly cause, such as regrowing trees or developing more eco friendly practicies. However, don’t be blind – check out what they are really using the money for, and make sure it isn’t just a gimmick.

These are a few basic characteristics of eco clothes, though you’ll learn more as you become a more eco-conscious shopper. To find some great eco fashion you can look online and do a little research. Unlike in the past, finding fashionable eco friendly clothing isn’t difficult!!
