Last week I wrote about the basics behind clothes donation, clearing up a few misconceptions hopefully in an effort to get more people donating clothes. Here are a few quick tips if you are thinking about donating:
1) The Charity: Remember that your clothes donation is not only helping you to become an eco empress, creating a more environmentally sustainable earth. It is also going to help a charity raise money. Pick that charity carefully and give to a cause you believe in.
2) The Location: Although point 1 is important, you may also want to pick a charity nearby to avoid any fuel costs or shipping across long distances. This is also important when considering the ‘green’ benefits of donating. You could even donate to a clothing bin at the same time as doing your weekly shop.
3) Be Thoughtful: When I volunteered at Oxfam there were countless occasions where people would come with their clothes donation when the shop wasn’t open and leave a black bag outside in the rain. Suffice to say many perfectly good clothes got ruined. Try to drop them off in a safe place, preferably when the shop is open if possible.
4) Be Helpful: If you’re going to donate anything of value then you want to let the charity shop know. You might know how much it is worth, but most charity shops are run by volunteers who could occasionally miss an important item. Tell them how much it’s worth so that they can sell it for as much money as possible.
5) Donate Everything Possible: Donate all the clothes that you don’t use, can’t wear anymore and aren’t wearable anymore. The charity shop will find a use for them, even if it just means recycling the materials. Never throw them away!
