Eco-Friendly Shoes

Being green means passing the benefits onto others, which is why I recommend TOMS vegan shoes. They help those in need by giving a pair to a child in need for every pair you buy!

Just continue reading below our sponsored ads for some tips and advice on eco friendly fashion and going green.

When I was moving home a few months ago, some of the items that I had to think carefully about were my shoes. I seem to buy new shoes all the time, keeping a huge collection – out of which I only really wear a small amount. I decided I’d try to get rid of a few that I never wear. But I don’t mean throw them out – I would never do that! Since I am aiming to become an Eco Empress I will of course donate shoes and anything else that I don’t use.

If you want to do the same, here are just a few reasons why:

  • Getting rid of things you never use helps free up a lot of space,
  • You might also be helping out a charity in the process,
  • Or somebody who is a lot less fortunate than you,
  • And you’ll be keeping waste from going into the landfill and harming the environment!

I don’t think you need any more convincing. However, you should always bear these facts in mind when you go to donate clothes:

  1. No matter whether you’re dropping the shoes in a shoe donation bin or giving them to a charity shop, you should always make sure that you have a matching pair of shoes that are either tied or bagged together in their own container.
  2. Your shoes need to be in good enough condition to be used again. This doesn’t mean they’re perfect for you, but they need to have some life left in them for somebody else to benefit.
  3. If your shoes have holes in them, don’t donate them.
  4. If your shoes are very dirty, clean them before you donate them.
  5. Never worry about what kind of shoes you have. Whether they are high heeled or hiking shoes, someone will wear them and they will raise money for charity.
  6. Even if your shoes are damaged or weak, they probably still have life left in them. They can even be sent to a program (such as Nike’s shoe recycling scheme) that makes use of the old materials.

So, there you have it. There is absolutely no excuse not to donate shoes from now on!

  • I donate our old running shoes to a local program because we don’t have the Nike recycling program in my city. My dress shoes are a different problem. Since I have tiny feet I keep my shoes as long as I can by resoling them, polishing, etc. by the time I’m done with them, they are so broken down that they are not donatable to a resell shop. What do you do with old dress shoes then?
