Being green means passing the benefits onto others, which is why I recommend TOMS vegan shoes. They help those in need by giving a pair to a child in need for every pair you buy!

When it comes to your shopping eco carrier bags may be something you’ve heard of as a way to be a little more eco friendly. The good news is that they do exist, and they are specially designed bags that are biodegradable as opposed to usual plastic bags. In fact, normal plastic bags could take years and years to degrade, at the same time releasing many toxic chemicals in landfills across the world.

Did you know that the average shopper will use around 280 carrier bags each and every year, which equates to thousands of bags in one person’s lifetime. The problem is what to do with all of these bags! Most people will just throw them away, after which it takes decades for them to decompose. And all this time it is releasing it’s chemicals into the environment – something that we should all take efforts to prevent if possible.

The good news is that there are bags that can degrade. The first is biodegradable meaning that they are made from natural products and start to degrade slowly as soon as they are made. Then there are degradable bags, which have an agent added to help them degrade into non-toxic chemicals. It’s important to understand that these options do exist, and non eco-friendly carrier bags are not the only option!

The main problem is that many shops are not making use of these environmentally-friendly methods yet. They still give us plastic bags, and they still give them to us when we don’t want them! Even when you’re buying a small item they might automatically put it into a carrier bag for you, which is a huge waste! This is why we need to insist that we don’t need a bag – even if that means strange looks from those working in the shop. You can also make use of reusable fabric bags, carrying this around with you everywhere you go so you’ll never need a plastic bag for your shopping.

If you choose to use a cloth bag then you could use as little as 15 of these in your whole lifetime! They’re much better for the environment and can even be washed if they need to. So, until shops start stocking more eco carrier bags, get your hands on a reusable cloth bag instead.
