When I was browsing Twitter this morning a link was posted about a government campaign that hopes to persuade more and more of us in the UK to reuse our old plastic bags and finally start using eco plastic bags!
According to the report, each shopper in the UK gets through around 13,000 bags in their lifetime! I don’t know about you, but I think that the figure is absolutely shocking. Why don’t we get more eco style and start buying eco plastic bags? And start taking them with us all the time?
One way that the British government is trying to get around this problem is to start forcing shops to charge customers for bags. Even though the charge is often 1 or 2p per bag, it certainly helps me to stop and think about why I really need it, and I hope it works on others too.
But the fact is that there are also many shops who just automatically bag up your items for you. Why can’t they simply ask the question ‘would you like a bag?’ – I bet a good number of people would say no and they would save a lot of plastic.
New Government Campaign
This new campaign seems full of eco style – “Get a bag habit”.
It basically encourages people to simply re-use their bags, and aims at supermarkets cutting down the bags they give out by around 50% by this May (which is only a month away!).
It isn’t just about buying trendy eco plastic bags, it’s about reusing the plastic bags you’ve already got. You also need to carry some bags around wherever you go, as you never know when you’re going to buy something. I often have a huge handbag on me so carrying a few items of shopping is never a problem!
