This is the first of hopefully many posts to come where I will evaluate an aspect of my life. Today is green recycling of my old makeup.
I don’t know about you, but I collect so many cosmetic and makeup products over the years. When I really get down to it and sort through it all I come to realise that I don’t use about half of what I own! So I’ve decided to have a huge clear out and get rid of a lot of it. But how can I get rid of it in a green way? Is it possible to recycle your makeup?
Green Recycling Options for Makeup
After a quick search online I have discovered that some cosmetic stores offer green recycling for your own makeup tubes and containers. This sounds great, but I’ve never seen them?!
The best way I can think to recycle a lot of my makeup products is to wash them out thoroughly and put them into the normal plastic recycling, if they’re suitable.
Of course, the next best thing to do is start shopping for easily recyclable products from now on. Choose stores that use minimal packaging and that accept the old products back once you’re done!
What If Your Makeup Isn’t Finished, Just Old?
I have heard many times that you shouldn’t keep makeup for too long. Especially eye makeup, as it gets bacteria inside it and generally isn’t as good after about six months. So what if there is loads of makeup left, but you need to get rid of it just because it is old?
1) Find another use for the makeup. For example, you might not use the eyeliner on your eyes but you could use it as a marker?
2) Clean off your old mascara wands to use them as eyebrow brushes.
3) Use powdered eye makeup or blusher to add a tint to paint and artworks (or, for that matter, use any kind of your makeup for art).
4) Make new lipstick: you can try adding eye shadow powder to petroleum jelly to create new lipstick/ lip gloss that you will actually use.
5) Check your local area for green recycling options!
These are just a few ways to reuse your makeup and really get the most out of it. I have to admit I’m not an expert, I’m just trying to think a little bit more about what I use. If you have any tips I’d love to hear them!
