Eco-Friendly Shoes

Being green means passing the benefits onto others, which is why I recommend TOMS vegan shoes. They help those in need by giving a pair to a child in need for every pair you buy!

This series about recycled fashion is getting long, but that’s because – in my mind – it’s really important! So, if you haven’t already, catch up on the series with Part I: Sorting Your Stuff, Part II: What Do You Really Wear?, and Part III: The Exceptions.

This part is dedicated to altering! Something that is pretty fresh territory for me. Though I am learning all the time (it’s what this blog is about).

For the purposes of this step I highly recommend this book:

I am based in the UK, and had to get hold of it from the US, but it was completely worth it. So comprehensive!

A Few Ideas for You

Back to the point… when I say altering clothes, I mean salvaging things that you might otherwise have got rid of in your huge wardrobe sort out.

Example 1: You have a huge baggy shirt that you want to get rid of. It doesn’t do you any favours and you just hate the cut. You can either get rid of it (i.e. donate it) or you can alter it to your tastes. A little careful altering and it can be a whole new, unique piece of recycled fashion!

Example 2 (this is a real example of mine): You have a pair of jeans that has a hole past the point of repair, and not in a very convenient place (i.e. the crotch). Again you could get rid of this, but charity shops aren’t going to be able to sell it. By far the best thing to do is chop off the legs (you can save these for another project), unpick the seams and re-sew it into a denim mini-skirt!

Example 3: You have a whole pile of clothes that don’t fit, but you absolutely loved the material/colour/pattern. You can’t bear to part with them. Firstly, DON’T put them back in your wardrobe as they will be lost forever. Take them out and rip them up. Gather a pile of material to use for making your own clothes or eco friendly bags in the future.

These are just some ideas off the top of my head, and by no means am I an expert! But if you want to get creative then I really recommend the above book. I’m going to try it as much as possible when I get a bit more comfortable sewing!

The last part of this series of recycled fashion is coming out next Tuesday!
